Commitment to Success
What is success? We hear this word so much, and we know success is a quality that is eminently desirable in the business world, but what is success, really?
Is success all about making a lot of money, or is it something more than that?
The dictionary defines success as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose” and also as “the attainment of popularity or profit.”
Yes, making a lot of money can certainly be an important byproduct of a successful enterprise, but it seems likely that success means more than just making money. Success is also tied into a very important quality in the person who achieves it, and that quality is commitment.
No enterprise ever “attained popularity or profit” without the person in charge having an incredible commitment to a goal. Whether the goal is to create a wonderful new charter school or to develop a new type of mobile app, commitment (here we go again), which is defined as “the state or quality of being committed to a cause” is key to the achievement of real, lasting success.
Commitment. You could also define commitment as having a single-minded vision, and a willingness to see a project through to completion no matter what difficulties may come up along the way. As Winston Churchill said, it all takes “blood, toil, tears and sweat” to really accomplish a goal successfully.
Ask Yourself the Key Questions Regarding Commitment
Okay, Churchill was a legendary leader, so of course he gave every endeavor everything he had, including his tears and sweat. There’s nothing dated about Churchill’s philosophy, however, even though he spoke those words over 70 years ago. Becoming a success in today’s competitive, complicated society takes more commitment than ever, which is why it’s important to ask yourself a few questions before launching a new project, in hopes of becoming a success.
Are you ready to commit yourself full on to this project, at the expense of your personal life and other interests?
Do you have a vision of how you want the project to unfold, and are you committed to seeing it through every step of the way?
Can you stay positive and keep your vision intact, even though you may be second-guessed and criticized?
Does the project truly line up with your personal beliefs?
If you can say yes to these questions, you have a good chance of achieving success in your endeavor. If you find yourself wavering, it may be time to review the project overall before launching it.
Real success has to come from a strong belief in what you do on every level. That belief will keep you committed over the long haul, until success is finally achieved.
